I hope it drives dialogue and, more importantly, actions to remedy the terrible, abusive methods in place within the public school & college systems. These stressed out kids are going to be the adults who run this country, manage companies & raise the next generation.
I had the honor and privilege to speak at the Northeast Unschooling Conference (NEUC) in Wakefield, MA, last weekend. Below is a segment of the talk. The talk was targeted at unschooling Dads; however, it’s really relevant for the breadwinner in the family, regardless of gender.
Based on the feedback we have been getting from our appearance in the media, a few of the big concerns voiced by parents who follow a more traditional education process include: Socialization; Following rules; Learning how to do things you don’t want to do. The belief that without school, kids cannot possibly be socialized, be able to do tasks that they don’t want to do, or follow rules, seems quite unfounded when you look at the way the real world must exist.
